Army specialist Rogelio V. served six years in the Illinois Army National Guard, including a tour of duty in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His assignment in Afghanistan involved patrols in a MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle. Rogelio left the Army and returned to civilian life, but was still troubled by injuries from the war. His daily life full with work, raising four kids with his wife and mentoring high risk youth in his community, Rogelio fell behind on his car payments due to unexpected expenses for urgent house repairs. SALUTE assisted the family with two car payments to keep them current on their car loan and ease financial stress.
“You said you wanted your donors to know who they are helping. Well, this is me: I am a family man, a combat veteran and also someone who cares a lot for his community and its youth. These are the things that drive me every day and keep me in the fight.
SALUTE is heaven sent for veterans like myself that sometimes run into snags in life or unforeseen circumstances that create more challenges than we are already facing in our lives. It is people like yourselves that make me proud to have honorably served my country.” -Rogelio
2023 Update: Rogelio reached out to SALUTE to express his thanks for our past support and report that he and his family are doing well. Rogelio is currently working as a Veteran Caseworker and Outreach Coordinator for US Senator Tammy Duckworth’s Chicago office, as well as volunteering at a veteran nonprofit. This volunteer role has enabled him to create opportunities for other veterans to connect with their communities and continue serving after their service. Thanks for reaching out Rogelio, and congratulations on all of your accomplishments. Thank you for all the good work you are doing in the veteran community.
