Palatine, IL, August 20, 2020 — SALUTE, INC., a Palatine-based nonprofit serving military veterans and their families, recently received a $20,000 grant from the Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF). Joseph VanFonda (USMC Sgt.Maj. Ret.), CEO of the Disabled Veterans National Foundation said, “We are proud to support SALUTE, INC., as they continue to make a positive impact in veterans’ lives. We would like to congratulate and thank them for their commitment to assisting the men and women who served in defense of our country.”
The DVNF provides critically needed support to disabled and at-risk veterans who leave the military wounded—physically or psychologically—and provides grants to organizations like SALUTE that are making an impact on veterans in their communities.
“We are so grateful to the DVNF for their generous grant,” said SALUTE Executive Director Mary Beth Beiersdorf. “It’s thanks to these types of grants, and donations from individuals in our community, that we’re able to continue our mission and help so many veterans in need.”
Since 2003, SALUTE has helped nearly 15,000 military personnel and their families by assisting with rent and mortgage, car payments, utility and medical bills, and everyday essentials like groceries.
“So often when injured veterans are returning home, they face mounting medical bills, unaddressed mental health issues and have to wait a significant amount of time before receiving their service connection pay,” said Beiersdorf. “Our goal is to help them get back on their feet by connecting them with resources and providing financial, physical and emotional support.”
Under normal circumstances, SALUTE raises funds through in-person events and by participating in various charity races, including the Bank of American Chicago Marathon. While the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of many of their 2020 events, there is no change to the level of assistance needed by veterans and their families. The DVNF grant will allow the organization to continue serving the increasing number of veterans reaching out during this trying time.
