Army Private First-Class Daniel enlisted in the Army after high school, and after completing his required active duty, he joined the National Guard. While serving his country in the Guard, Daniel worked through many assignments. When the country was struggling with the pandemic, Daniel’s National Guard unit was assigned to work at the state COVID-19 vaccination centers. Despite the full-time work involved, paychecks were greatly delayed for Daniel and the rest of his unit, due to a bureaucratic issue. During the same period, Daniel’s wife lost her job due to COVID-related shutdowns. She applied for unemployment, but because of the overwhelming demand on the state system, there was a backlog of applicants. The family was truly in a bind on how the rent was going to be paid. Daniel was referred to SALUTE by the VA, and we were able to provide rent for the family, tiding them over until their paychecks and unemployment checks are received.
